Wine for the Weekend of 4/10/20

San Gimignano

Vernaccia is the Wine for the Weekend of 4/10/20

The reason Vernaccia is the Wine for the Weekend of 4/10/20 is because it is a nice white wine to usher in the Spring. Formally, it is called Vernaccia di San Gimignano pronounced ver-na-CHI-a di sahn-gi-min-YA-no. That is a tough one. It is the primary white wine of Tuscany. Hopefully, you visit there one day and hear them pronounce it. Also, visit the town itself. It is the medieval town of bell towers. For years, vernaccia was basically the only white wine produced in Tuscany as a single varietal. Now, some wineries are experimenting with other varietals. For example, Castello Banfi makes a white wine with vermentino grapes. See the map below. Vernaccia is in the pink area.

Aromas, Tastes and Pairings

Vernaccia is straw yellow in color. And, it is unoaked. It has floral, citrus stone fruit and herbal aromas. Vernaccia has flavors of stone fruit, lemon zest, sage, and minerality with hints of anise and almonds on the finish. Pair this with seafood salads, calamari, and other seafood dishes.

Vernaccia Wines

You can trust any Vernaccia wine from San Gimignano to taste great. The better ones have dark colored bottles, instead of clear. That prevents the wine from being harmed by light. Fattoria il Palagio is owned by Sting and his wife! I had the pleasure of visiting there years ago. I still have a bottle of their Super Tuscan red called Arnolfo di Cambio. If you ever visit a wine region, buy lots of wine to take home. You will be sorry years later if you do not.
