Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand is the Wine for the Weekend of 11/8/19

The reason sauvignon blanc from New Zealand is the wine for the weekend of 11/8/19 is because I recently discovered some new things about it. First, it pairs beautifully with breaded and fried tomatoes. In addition, it tastes horrible with ice cream. Therefore, don’t try it with any dairy based dish. And, the best reason is to discover how good and different it is than other white wines. Also, sauvignon blanc is one of the parents of cabernet sauvignon. The other is cabernet franc. New Zealand is one of the best places for this grape. The information above applies to all countries that produce it.

Aromas and Tastes

Sauvignon blanc is not your average white wine. It has a unique flavor of lemon or lime. You can smell it and taste it. It is noticed after you swallow. This makes it great to pair with things that other white wines do not. Also, it is a great choice to drink after you eat a meal with lots of garlic, because the lemon lime cleanses the palate. The primary fruit flavors are lemon, lime, green apple, passion fruit and melon. Depending on how ripe the grapes are when the wine is made, the flavor ranges from lime to melon. Also, it has an herbal quality.

Food Pairings

Sauvignon blanc is the best wine for most salads. It can be the dressing. However, beware vinegar. Vinegar destroys any wine! Therefore, ask your server if they can make you a citrus based dressing. If not, then just pour some olive oil and spices on your salad. Let the wine do the rest. And, it is a great match for green veggies like asparagus, zucchini, peas, and artichokes. Also, sauvignon blanc goes nicely with oysters, grilled seafood, sole, flounder, tilapia, etc.

You can buy any sauvignon blanc from New Zealand. A good wine shop will have a section for New Zealand. However, others might combine them with Australia. It’s ridiculous, but true. Although, you most likely will find them from the Marlborough region, it is produced elsewhere. Unfortunately, there are producers who don’t ship to America. The picture below is just one example.
