Wine for the Weekend of 1/3/20

Primitivo Grapes

Primtivo from Puglia is the Wine for the Weekend of 1/3/20

The reason I chose Primtivo from Puglia (Apulia) as the Wine for the Weekend of 1/3/20 is to give you some examples of good Italian primitivo. Since Layer Cake’s poor attempt, I think it is wise to show you the good ones. See the map below. The best primitvo is called Primitivo di Manduria. It costs between $16-$50 or more. It depends on the winery. Noice hoe the grapes ripen unevenly in the picture above. That is normal as primitvio is an early ripening wine.

Aromas, Tastes and Pairings

Primitivo exhibits classic aromas of strawberry, cherry, red berries and plums If you’re searching for a richer, fuller-bodied red, look towards Puglian primitivo. It tastes of dark fruit like fresh figs, blueberries and blackberries. There is a distinct dried fruit-leather character to it as well. Since primitivo wines tend to be on the fruitier side, they form a great pair with sweet or spicy barbeque dishes. It is important to not that primitivio arrived from Croatia a long time ago. Eventually, it made its way towards California. They named it zinfandel! And, the same grape produces different wines.
