Layer Cake Makes More Bad Wine With Their Primitivo

Bad Wine

Layer Cake Primitivo Is A Bad Wine

Layer Cake Makes More Bad Wine With Their Primitivo, because of several reasons. First, it begins with a nice flavor, but the finish is short lived and disappointing. We deserve wines with a finish. Life is too short to drink bad wine. It is very disappointing, because it is made in Italy. Therefore, I expect better. However, it is a short lived finish like their California Cabernet Sauvignon.

Short Finish

One hundred percent hand crafted means that production is controlled by the winery. And, it means from growing the grapes to the bottling. This is a good thing. Why do you think they put zinfandel on the label? Because, they are marketing it to the U.S. That is not a good thing. It means they are making it for American’s palates, fruity and easy to swallow.

The paragraph on the back is embarrassing to say the least. WINE IS NOT SUPPOSED TO TASTE LIKE CAKE! The IGT means it was not made according to the laws for wine making in the region of Puglia. This is neither a good nor a bad thing depending on the wine. This wine is fruit forward, but it has a short finish. That is considered a flaw in the wine. I would rate it about 85-86 points which is just okay. And, I do not like that it is bottled by an unknown entity. If you want to buy good Primitivo, buy one that does not say zinfandel on the label.

  1. What’s the price point of this wine?

I agree with your review, but as a self confessed wine snob I wouldn’t buy layer cake wine.

Having said that, a couple of positives from the label are the lower % abv, which at 13.5% is 3% lower than many California Zins. Plus the wine is at least bottle in Italy, rather than imported in bulk and bottled in the US (as a number of lower price wines are) which suggests better than bulk wine quality.

Look forward to reading your next post.

    1. Hi Jamie. You’re not a wine snob. You learned it. Layer Cake Cab and Primitivo are in the $16-17 range which is too much. People buy labels. My goal is to educate the average person about wine. They may say 13.5%, but you probably are aware that Zin grapes are finicky with their sugar levels. So it may be higher just like Cali. My guess is they found a small producer in Italy to either make it or they took it over. I am a big fan of Italian wine and this one turns my stomach having their name on an Italian label. Thanks for reading. Frank
