Germany Map of Wine Regions

Germany Is Where

Germany Is Where To Find The Best Riesling In The World. The main regions for Riesling in Germany are the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Rheingau and Pfalz. The first are rivers where the grapes grow on the banks. The last two are grown in mountainous regions. Terroir is the key which makes each of these regions produce different types. What I love about Riesling is that it is basically one of 2 or 3 wines that you can drink through a 7-course meal from appetizers to dessert. So you do not have to over-worry about pairings. It goes well with almost everything. There is a good one that is inexpensive by Moselland. It’s shaped in multi-colored cat bottles which come in 500ml, instead of the normal 750ml bottle size. Usually, most wine stores carry the black bottle.

Tasting Notes

When I try to break people into white wines, I usually start with Moscato d’Asti which is sweet and goes down easy. Then I will recommend riesling which fools the average person because they think it’s sweet. Surprise, they are dry. However, your average Riesling is loaded with fruit flavors like nectarine, apricot, pineapple, apple, and pear, etc. It is high in acidity which is why it goes with most foods. And, the fruit takes you right into dessert!

I suggest some more below, however any Riesling is fine. Just make sure you buy one from the regions above. Also, Rieslings do come in varieties that get sweeter and sweeter. There are ones such as spatlese, auslese, beerenauslese and trockenbeerenauslese. As you move along, they become sweeter until they result in dessert wines. There are other places that make good riesling such as Alsace, France and Washington State. The grape prefers a cold climate. You can always contact me even if you are standing in the liquor store. Many winemakers in Germany will have Dr. in front of their name due to the degree they can obtain in school. Also, blue bottles are common as well as black. Who remembers Blue Nun and Black Tower Riesling?
